Toby and Katie, both from Atlanta, Georgia, met at the University of Georgia in 1997, as Toby was finishing his undergrad degree (German and Pol. Sci.) and Katie was starting a Master’s program in Music Education (Katie got her bachelor’s degree in Music and Psychology from Duke University). They were married in 1999, and moved to Oregon, where Toby got his Master of Divinity from Multnomah University in Portland, and Katie was a music teacher. In 2003, Toby and Katie moved to Boone to start a campus ministry at Appalachian State. In 2004, Katie gave birth to Jacob, and in 2007, she gave birth to Sarah Grace.
Toby’s more-refined interests include history, New Testament studies, foreign films, the Middle East, and coming up with ideas for Camp Evergreen each summer. His other pastimes include watching old Seinfeld reruns, collecting Simpsons memorabilia, and eating (fresh) Krispy Kreme donuts. He is also, to the chagrin of his wife, a huge fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Katie’s refined interests include organic cooking, environmental issues, and fine literature. She serves as the year-round director of Camp Evergreen, performing various chores such as website-building, parent calling, and staffing counselors. Nevertheless, she can also be found watching horrible Disney channel movies (you know, the ones about 12 year-old girls whose parents never believed their daughters could be an astronaut/fashion-designer/racecar-driver, but by the end of the movie, SURPRISE!, their parents realize that their 12 year-old was right all along!), running, eating Jelly Belly brand jelly beans in alarming quantities, and shopping for bargains at Big Lots.
We like to call Jacob, our 5 year-old, the Director of Fellowship Ministries. He loves Batman and Spiderman, his Playmobil toys, dressing as a pirate/superhero/cowboy/knight, and singing improvised songs at the top of his lungs accompanied by an out-of-tune guitar. Jacob is certain that students come to our house for the sole purpose of playing with him!
Sarah Grace, who is now 2 years old, likes baking pretend cookies, dressing up as a bride (sometimes with a pirate hat instead of a veil) and jumping on her brother's bed.
